Mayor Mario Durán recently announced the upcoming construction of the new San Salvador municipal shelter for homeless people that will operate 365 days a year. The news was shared during the Christmas dinner prepared for the users of the temporary shelter set up in the Katya Miranda Complex.

“The new shelter will be built here, in the Katya Miranda Complex, will have a total capacity of 150 people and will have three dormitory sections: for women, men and for family groups, each one will be equipped with air conditioning and lockers. There will also be a kitchen-dining room, where food will be provided to users, as well as sanitary services, showers with non-slip floors to avoid accidents, and a laundry area. Duran said.

Likewise, a nursing room will be set up for basic medical assistance and multipurpose rooms for activities such as occupational therapy, reading rooms, recreation, among others. The outdoor recreation area will serve to integrate outdoor activities.

“The total amount of this work will be half a million dollars and we hope to finish it in the second half of next year. This administration reaffirms the commitment it has with all the citizens of the capital, without any exclusion”, detailed the mayor.

Meanwhile, the administrative staff will have adequate areas to receive users and visitors, under an income record. Security will be in charge of the Metropolitan Agents Corps (CAM) which will have a 24/7 surveillance booth that will serve as a control point to guarantee the physical integrity of users, administrative staff and visitors.

The new building will replace the current one located on 23 North Avenue, close to the Don Rúa complex, where a first-class sports center will also be built to which the entire population will have access.

“We will continue working for each person who suffered social abandonment and was made invisible in recent years. All social sectors deserve attention and are a priority for our administration”, he pointed out.
