The Caribbean and China discuss the climate crisis and renewable energy transformation

San Juan.– Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Caricom meet this Friday in Dominica with senior Chinese officials to strengthen their bilateral relations, and discuss issues such as the climate crisis and the transformation of renewable energy in the Asian country.

The delegation from the Asian giant is headed by Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu, in what is the first meeting between Chinese officials and members of the Caribbean Community, Dominica’s Foreign Affairs Minister Vince Henderson said.

As Henderson explained, the meeting seeks to strengthen the relationship between China and the members of Caricom, but “in a framework in which topics of interest and common issues abound.”

“Obviously, one of the priority issues will be the climate crisis, recognizing the role China has played in its renewable energy transformation”Henderson maintained.

“China is one of the few countries that will succeed in exceeding its targets of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels by 2030,” he added.

Therefore, Henderson said that the Government of Dominica will give greater importance to this issue.

“For us, the direct impact of the climate crisis in our area, the Caribbean, is an existence threat,” Henderson said, adding that other issues that will be discussed with senior Chinese officials are security, the economy and the humanitarian challenges it faces. Haiti.

According to Henderson, The objective of discussing the situation in Haiti is to find out how China can play a better role based on what concerns us in the Caribbean and the Caribbean country.

Thus, Henderson echoed the recommendation given earlier this week by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to the international community on the need to form a foreign security force in Haiti.

“We must collectively do more to help the Haitian people chart the best path toward elections and a political solution,” Guterres said.

To do this, he stressed that “the most important thing is that we need countries that have strong police forces and the necessary equipment and logistical support to volunteer.”
