It is no surprise to anyone that the saga of Harry Potter became a worldwide phenomenon, conquering fans from several generations. Since it appeared in 2001, the story of the wizard who survived has caught the attention of the audience and, in addition to being successful at the box office, was successful enough to earn six other sequels.

But more than that, the character’s story also inspired several other productions, which drank from the ideas of the controversial JK Rowling. Thinking about it, the canaltech listed 5 films and series that follow the same proposal of Harry Potter.

5. Lockwood & Co

Launched in 2023, Lockwood & Co tells the story of a world that is haunted by ghosts and deadly spirits. To combat them, a group of three teenagers and paranormal hunters come together and create Lockwood & Co – an amateur ghost hunting company led by young Anthony Lockwood. Together they will face various dangers and have to deal with absurd situations.

Like this Harry Potter, the story was also based on a children’s book, this time in the eponymous series of novels by Jonathan Stroud, which is set in London. At the time of this report, the series has only one season with eight episodes available.

You can watch the Lockwood & Co at Netflix.

4. The Magicians

Another series of magic that drank from the same sources of Harry Potter and can conquer the fans of the saga is The Magicians. Released in 2015, the plot accompanies Quentin Coldwater, a young man who enrolls at Brakebills University of Magical Pedagogy to be trained as a magician.

There he discovers that the entire enchanted universe he read about in children’s books is real and is part of his life, however, as not everything is flowers, such a world can pose a risk to society. On the other side, we meet Julia, her childhood friend who is denied entry into the University and is going to look for magic elsewhere.

With five seasons completed, The Magicians it was also based on a book. In this case, in the eponymous novel by Lev Grossman.

You can watch the series on Globoplay.

3. Charmed

Still talking about series that bring a trio of wizards as protagonists, charmed also deserves mention. The production tells the story of Phoebe, Prue and Piper, sisters who move in together after one of their grandmothers dies.

Together, they discover a book of magic and invoke the “power of three”, a spell that gives them magical powers and transforms them into witches, whose mission is to fight demons and protect the innocent.

From then on, the young witches face several adventures and challenges, and after a few years they end up discovering a half-sister who also wants to join the family.

Launched in 1998, the production had eight seasons and conquered the public. Ten years later, charmed won a reboot that already has four seasons that can be watched on Globoplay.

2. The School for Good and Evil

Leaving the series and going to the movies, The School of Good and Evil also follows the same proposal of Harry Potter and abuses fantasy by telling the story of Sophie and Agatha, two friends who enter a school where boys and girls are trained to become villains or heroes of fables.

Sophie, for having an angelic appearance, believes that she will be chosen for the School of Good, since Agatha imagines that her destiny will be the School of Evil. Fate, however, plays a trick on the two friends and they go to the opposite school from what they imagined, which leaves them vulnerable and puts their friendship in check.

Directed by Paul Feig (Maid of Honor Mission) and written by David Magee (The Adventures of Pi), the film was released in 2022 and featured Sophia Anne Caruso, Sofia Wylie, Jamie Flatters, Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, among others.

The School of Good and Evil is available at Netflix.

1. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

It is impossible to speak of productions that follow the same proposal of Harry Potter not to mention Sabrina, the famous little witch who has appeared in movies, series and even cartoons. Although the wizards’ story is different, both are teenagers who try to deal with the great power they have in order to not let the dark forces win.

In the Netflix series, released in 2018, Kiernan Shipka gives life to the protagonist, a girl who is about to turn 16 and who is divided between the human world and the wizarding world. On her birthday, however, she will have to choose which of the worlds she wants to live in.

In the midst of all this, she still has to deal with the problems of teenage life, with her friends at school, and with her aunts Hilda and Zelda Spellman.

With Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Abigail Cowen, Luke Cook, among others in the cast, the series attracted the audience of Netflix, but after four seasons it was canceled. And although the ending is not so pleasing, it is worth giving the story a chance.

you can watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina at Netflix.
