The Civil Guard intercepts a drug submarine in the Atlantic

Agents from the Civil Guard, National Police and Customs Surveillance have intercepted a narco-submarine 280 miles west of the coast of Cdiz, arresting its four crew members, all of Colombian nationality. The operation resulted in the rescue of the crew members after intentionally sinking the device upon noticing the approach of the patrol vessel Fulmar.

The intervention began on June 24, when the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of the United States provide information about a possible drug transshipment in an area already under heightened surveillance. The next day, on the morning of June 25, the Customs Surveillance ship Fulmar located a 20-meter-long semi-submersible, similar to those previously detected in the Aldán estuary in 2019 and in the Arousa estuary in 2023.

Previous operation in the Canary Islands

This operation is added to another intervention carried out three days before, in which 900 kilos of cocaine thrown into the sea by a drug boat 200 miles from the Canary Islands. The boat was detected by the Fulmar in the early morning of June 22. Upon being discovered, the crew of the drug boat tried to flee despite the weather conditions, causing a chase that lasted for more than six hours and throwing the 30 bales of drugs into the sea.

The chase ended when it was verified that the entire cargo had been thrown into the sea, at which time the pursued vessel He headed towards the island of La Palma. Curiously, the next day an abandoned boat was found on the beach of Tazacorte in La Palma, which almost certainly, according to the Ministry of the Interiorwas the same one that had escaped after being chased by the Special Operations Ship.

The detainees and the information collected have been made available to the Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court, which will continue with the corresponding investigations.
