The deadline to file taxes is approaching

If you have not filed your tax return, you have a few more days to do so.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is sending a reminder that meeting the tax deadline is crucial.

You have until April 15 to submit your return.

If you don’t file by the deadline, the IRS will impose a 5 percent penalty for each month you’re late.

Although you can request an extension before April 15, which means you will have until October 15 to file your return.

Last month, the IRS launched a new pilot version of its “direct file” website in 12 states, including New York.

Taxpayers with simple tax forms, such as W-2 and certain 10-99s, as well as Social Security beneficiaries, can file directly with the IRS, and for free, through the directfile.irs website. gov

An estimated 2.8 million New Yorkers are eligible.
