  • Flink shares exciting data on consumer behavior – from crazy energy drink numbers to protein & snack months
  • Vegan products on the rise… So far, so clear. But which city has the highest consumption of dog and cat food?
  • Cologne consumes the most “German” products, such as sausage and beer

Typical German products: bread, beer and sausage. Where are they most popular?

Germany is known for its love of sausage, beer and freshly baked bread. But which major city is the largest consumer in these categories?

In Cologne, the sausage is king. The city is the largest per capita consumer of sausage compared to all other major German cities. But that’s not all: Cologne also leads by a wide margin when it comes to beer sales. The city has a significantly higher consumption per capita than Hamburg, Berlin and Munich.

When it comes to freshly baked bread, Hamburg is our winner. The people of Hamburg have a clear preference for wheat rolls from the “Junge” bakery. It is even sold there 4.5 times more often than any other fresh bread in our range.

Munich seems to prefer local products. The best-selling soft drink there is “Paulaner Spezi” and the most popular beer, surprise: Augustiner Hell.

Energy boost: who uses coffee, energy drinks or vitamin C?

We all need an energy boost from time to time, whether it’s through coffee, energy drinks or vitamin C. But apparently energy drinks have the edge. In fact, the average turnover with these is 11 times higher than with coffee and here, too, Cologne is ahead by a nose, where the per capita consumption is even 50% above the average of all other major German cities. But watch out, the sole champion and very loyal customer is an Offenbacher, with 294 Effect Energy Drinks ordered he is right in front. Many Berliners, our biggest buyers of vitamin C preparations, rely on the healthy energy boost. Whether it’s fueling up for the party or for work, Germans know how to stay awake!

Vegan products are trendy: Germany leads in Europe

In Germany, the demand for vegan products is growing much faster than in our other markets, France and the Netherlands. With a 53% share of alternative milk orders, the Germans are at the top in this area. Berlin and Hamburg compete for the crown as the most vegan city, with Berlin celebrating a stage win as 59% of milk orders here come from alternative sources. The district of Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin stands out in particular, with 63% of all milk orders being vegan.

The most pet-friendly cities in Germany

In Germany’s cities, things get really animalistic: Cologne and Berlin are going head-to-head for the title of the most pet-friendly city.

If we take a closer look, there is a clear difference: Felix wet food products are the most popular in the cat category in Cologne. Dogs, on the other hand, are all about poultry.

A strong trend: fitness food in German cities

While fitness nutrition is experiencing a lot of hype, consumption by our customers is highest in the summer, with a peak in the month of August. In contrast, the consumption of sweet and salty snacks peaks in March and decreases in August. This shows that the fitness intentions of our customers are probably implemented with a delay.

Frankfurt stands out, with summer snack consumption down 30% and protein consumption up 160% compared to the start of the year. Wow!
