As SVT previously reported, the king has expressed strong criticism in a documentary series against the Swedish monarchy’s order of succession being changed after the birth of Prince Carl Philip. The change meant that the prince lost his succession to the throne, which instead went to Princess Victoria.
– Having laws that work retroactively is not wise, I still think so. My son Prince Carl Philip was born and then suddenly they change so he gets rid of it all. It’s quite strange, I think, says the king in the documentary series “Sveriges sista kungar”.
The court called
The day after the interview, the court called the documentary series’ producer Göran Ellung and wanted the king to clarify his statement, but the king said much the same thing in the second interview. He adds that the change has not led to any rifts between the siblings.
– He (Carl Philip) has taken it well, says the king.
“Hurt me deeply”
On Thursday, the court issued a press release in which it is clear that the king’s interview answers are not meant as criticism of the female line of succession or of Crown Princess Victoria. The king says:
“It has pained me deeply when, in retrospect, I have read comments that claim that I would not stand behind my daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, as Sweden’s heir to the throne.”
“The female succession to the throne is a matter of course for me. The Crown Princess is my successor. She is an extraordinary asset to me, my family and our country. I am proud of her and her tireless work for Sweden.”
