With the success of The Last Of Us series, we inevitably ask ourselves questions about the arrival of a third episode in video games. And yet…
It did not escape you, the series The Last of Us is a real hit on Amazon Prime Video and overall it’s a success at all levels. Building on its success, the Naughy Dog studio behind the license as well as that of Uncharted can be proud. But despite the context, Neil Druckmann, co-president of the studio, made some shocking statements to the BuzzFeed site on the future of the saga.
Naughty Dog, no pressure from Sony for The Last of Us
With the success of the current series, one could have imagined a major movement at Naughty Dog with Sony in ambush, which is trying by all means to capitalize on this success to offer The Last of Us over several years. But yet it’s a bit the opposite that is happening according to the words of Mr. Druckmann himself.
I know there are a lot of people who wonder about The Last of Us Part 3 and whether it will exist or not. All I could say is that we at Naughty Dog are very, very privileged to have Sony as our publisher – which means Sony funds our games, supports us, and we belong to Sony.
They’ve supported us every step of the way to follow our passions – when something succeeds, people think there’s all this pressure and we absolutely have to make a sequel. This is not the case. For us, Uncharted was a wild success – Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games – and we’re able to put our final brush on that story and say we’re done. We are moving forward.
Likewise, with The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue or not..
Our process is the same as we did when we did part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love – just like the first and the second game did – so ok. If we can’t come up with something good, we have a very strong ending with part 2 and that will be the end.
You read correctly, it is possible that TLOU Part 2 or the last game in the series if the Naughy Dog studio finds nothing interesting to say on the subject. No pressure seems to be exerted on the side of Sony to force the hand of the teams, if it is true, it is a very healthy behavior that we can only congratulate.
