The demand for workers with specific digital skills is no longer an exclusive feature of some sectors, but instead it is extending to the entire labor market.
The researchers of the Burning Glass Institute they analysed hundreds of millions of job offers in the United States, to identify the four most in-demand and highest-paying skills, publishing the findings in the report How Skills are Disrupting Work.
228 million ads were considered, revealing a very clear trend; the most in-demand skills are artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud computing, product management and social media.
The researchers found that one bid out of eight required at least one of these competencies as a requirement.
According to the report, the demand for these skills is a clear example of the revolution taking place and serve as a laboratory for understanding the overall trend.
The increase in demand for these four skill sets was 122% on a five-year basis in 2021, compared to an average growth rate of 10%.
At the top of this ranking are the relevant skills AI and ML, which see the fastest growth of any skill set: the observed rate is in fact equal to 370% in five years, two or three times faster than other rapidly growing skills.
An evolving market
The technology sector is currently experiencing a meteoric growth and is expected to digital skills are becoming increasingly important for all workers.
Those who have or will develop skills in AI/ML, cloud computing and product management can be rewarded both in terms of earnings and opportunities.
Digital skills are spreading across all sectors, but this is not the case for everyone: some traditional roles such as business consultancy, specialized sales and web development however, they are recording a decline of the question.
