Natural dyeing process

If we choose the red ones from Tropea we will get a pleasant burgundy-amaranth color while with the yellow onion skins we will have an ocher colour. We put the peels to boil of onion in a steel pot full of water. Let it simmer for about an hour. We filter thus eliminating the skins and we immerse our garment. Return to the stove and heat for about 30 minutes. We remove from the fire and leave soaked for about 8 hours. Rinse abundantly and put soaking again with half a glass of vinegar and a liter and a half of water for at least 30 minutes. The vinegar works to fix the color. Now we can wash our garment with a neutral detergent.

The use of onion peels in the garden
Onion waste is invaluable in the garden, for example for mulching of the ground. If we want to protect the roots of some plants or shrubs that could be affected by winter frosts, we could recycle our onion peels. Just spread them on the ground at the base of the plants together with the shells of walnuts and pistachios. In this way they will form a protective layer of the soil which it will also prevent weeds from growing. Also as they decompose, will enrich the ground with potassium.
