GenDesign, the developers of The Last Guardian, have big plans for this year. At least it sounds a lot like a new reveal is on the horizon.
It won’t be The Last Guardian 2
In a New Year’s greeting on social media, the studio said 2023 will “finally be a year with a lot to talk about.”
It continued, “We are working hard to make this a great year for you, so please look forward to it.”

In 2014, developer GenDesign was founded by former members of Team Ico. Team Ico, led by Fumito Ueda, was known for the projects Ico released in 2001 and Shadow of the Colossus in 2005.
An artwork for GenDesign’s next game was shared in 2021. Additionally, there’s a website teaser from 2018, Ueda told opposite Famitsuthat the next project will be of a similar scope to its previous titles.
“What we’re doing now doesn’t feel like an indie game. We’re ultimately aiming for something on the scale of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian,” said Ueda. It shouldn’t be a sequel, but rather a separate title. So no The Last Guardian 2. Too bad.
“If larger-scale development becomes interesting for us, then I think we’ll expand our development system significantly and hand it over to a big development team to make it a big game.”
The game is said to be one of the first after Control and Playdead to be published directly by Epic Games.
