Wesel.
The “Free & Outside” festival in the Heubergpark boasts a rocking line-up and names well-known names.

It’s a special edition this year: The EselRock celebrates its 15th birthday on May 19th and 20th. In 2008, the “Free & Outside” festival invited for the first time. On stage: still relatively unknown rock bands. But the concept worked. 7000 people visited the Heubergpark.

In the meantime, EselRock has established itself in the North Rhine-Westphalian calendar of events – and sometimes also attracts international music greats to the center of Wesel. The main act this year are The Subways (Sat, 10:30 p.m.). Their probably most successful hit “Rock & Roll Queen” is almost two decades old, but the trio is a welcome guest at many summer festivals. The three should not only have the hit single in their luggage, but also something new from the newcomer “Uncertain Joys”.

Die Happy (Fri, 9:50 p.m.) also hit rocky tones. The band from Ulm, led by frontwoman Marta Jandová, has been on stage for 30 years and released their latest studio record “Guess What?” in 2020. However, the quintet has not become quieter, as the pop rockers want to prove on the main stage of EselRock.

The former enfant terrible of German hip-hop is taking a completely different musical direction: Ferris, alias Ferris MC, is bringing his latest album “Alle hates Ferris” with him to his performance on Saturday (8 p.m.). With the third record since his change of style, Ferris dedicates himself more to rock and punk.

Tim Vantol twice

Finally, old acquaintances follow, including Tim Vantol, who honors EselRock twice this year. The Dutchman opens the festival on Friday with a solo performance on the food court stage (4:45 p.m.). The next day there will be an encore on the lake stage (9.15 p.m.).

Flash Forward also honored the then still young open-air event for the first time in 2011. On Friday they will be on the main stage with their current album “Endings = Beginnings”. The line-up is far from complete. Anyone who also takes part in the serenade for the round EselRock birthday and other information, gives up eselrock.de.

EselRock, 19.+20.5., Fri from 4.30 p.m., Sat from 2 p.m., Heubergpark, Friedrichstr. 24, Wesel. Admission free.
