The rumor had been circulating for several months. The Taiwanese group Prologium will create a factory of solid batteries for electric vehicles in Dunkirk (North), according to Reuters. Information that BFM Grand Littoral is able to confirm.
The result of negotiations between the State, the Hauts-de-France region and the urban community of Dunkirk, this project should represent a total investment of 5.2 billion euros and generate 2,000 jobs by 2030. Emmanuel Macron is expected on site on Friday to formalize the announcement.
Work on this gigafactory should begin in 2024 for commissioning in 2026. Ultimately, the site aims for a production capacity capable of equipping between 500,000 and 750,000 electric vehicles per year.
Solid-state batteries are supposed to overcome several limitations of current lithium-ion batteries: longer range, more safety, fewer fires and faster charging time.
4th battery factory in France
There have so far been three known projects in France for battery factories for electric cars, all planned in Hauts-de-France. The ACC battery factory (joint venture of Stellantis, TotalEnergies and Mercedes-Benz) is due to open in the coming months in Douvrin (Pas-de-Calais), in the suburbs of Lens.
It will be followed by the factory of the Sino-Japanese group AESC-Envision in Douai (Nord), which will produce for Renault from the beginning of 2025, then that of the Grenoble start-up Verkor, which will produce from mid-2025. , mainly for Renault as well.
