The UN follows the electoral situation in Guatemala "with concern"

United Nations.- The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, is following “with concern” the events in Guatemala after the June 25 elections, the results of which were suspended by the country’s highest court.

However, the second round between Sandra Torres, candidate for the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party, which won those presidential elections with 15.04% of the vote, and Bernardo Arévalo, of the Seed party, with 12 .25% of the vote, is still scheduled for August 20.

The Constitutional Court (CC) decided last weekend to suspend the results of the elections, which has been classified as arbitrary by experts who question the future of the electoral process.

“Guterres has taken note of the concerns expressed and is confident that any action taken will be in accordance with applicable electoral rules,” his spokesman Farhan Haq said during a UN press conference.

The decision of the high judicial forum arose after a request from nine parties of the country’s traditional politics that allege that before adjudicating the charges, the minutes of the June 25 vote should be reviewed again.

There are no precedents in the history of the Guatemalan elections where the results are frozen by a court in the absence of defining the authorities that will lead the country between 2024 and 2028.
