The US asks the Niger junta to release the family of the deposed president as "goodwill gesture"

MADRID, 11 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, has reiterated this Friday his “serious concern” about the situation in which the ousted president of Niger finds himself, Mohamed Bazoum, and has regretted in a conversation with the former Nigerian president Mahamadou Issoufou that the coup junta has not even decided to release his family as a “gesture of goodwill”.

Blinken, who has regretted the “illegal” arrest of Bazoum and the deterioration of his situation, has transferred to Issoufou the commitment of the Joe Biden Administration to try to achieve a “peaceful resolution” to the crisis and that Niger “can continue being a strong ally for security and development in the region” of the Sahel, according to a statement from the State Department.

In addition to Bazoum, the junta is holding his wife and a son, but the current regime has so far shown no signs of giving in to requests coming from various countries, including members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). ). This bloc calls for a return to “constitutional order” and does not rule out a military intervention in Niger.
