EFE News Writing, Apr 10 (EFE).- A Peruvian immigrant, accused in his native country of belonging to a death squad in the 1990s and who was in the United States undocumented, was deported to Peru, reported today the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).

Aldo Albert Velásquez Asencio, 57, was expelled from the United States after being detained in New Jersey.

Velásquez had entered the United States on February 24, 2022 without passing proper inspection, ICE said in a statement.

In September 2022, a federal immigration judge ordered Velásquez removed to Peru.

The immigrant appealed to the Board of Immigration Appeals to avoid his deportation, but that body dismissed his appeal last January, which gave free rein to the expulsion.

Velásquez is accused in Peru of belonging to the Colina Group, a paramilitary group established in August 1991 that was linked to the forced disappearance of nine students and a teacher in Lima, the Peruvian capital, in July 1992, ICE explained.

Kenneth Genalo, director of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Office (ERO) in New York, highlighted in a statement the work of his agents to remove from the community “a very dangerous non-citizen” who was wanted in his country.

The investigation was supported by the Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center (HRVWCC), a division of ICE dedicated to identifying, locating, and prosecuting human rights abusers, including those known or suspected to have engaged in persecution, war crimes, genocide, torture, extrajudicial killings, female genital mutilation, and the use or recruitment of children as soldiers.

HRVWCC also collaborated in the April 4 arrest of Salvadoran immigrant Roberto Antonio Garay Saravia, a retired military man who during his active duty participated in multiple operations, including the El Mozote Massacre, where more than 1,000 adult and child civilians were killed.
