The US has intercepted almost 7,000 Cuban rafters in 10 months

FLORIDA.- So far in fiscal year 2023, which began on October 1, 2022, the United States Coast Guard recorded a significant increase in the number of rafters intercepted in US territorial waters. According to the latest available figures, a total of 6,967 Cuban immigrants have been found at sea by Coast Guard crews.

according to review Marti News, the United States Embassy in Havana is actively working to raise awareness of the risks associated with this type of migration. Under the hashtag #NoTeRriesgues, the aim is to discourage people from jumping into the sea in improvised boats and endangering their lives in search of an uncertain future.

These figures underscore the importance of the Coast Guard’s patrol and surveillance work in territorial waters. Despite the risks and dangers involved in illegal migration journeys, the number of people willing to take them seems to remain high.

fugitive rafters

The Cuban Ministry of the Interior (MININT) recently shared details about a group of rafters who were repatriated last Saturday, revealing that among them were three individuals wanted by the justice system as fugitives, according to details Cuban newspaper.

According to the statement issued by the entity, these individuals who tried to enter the United States irregularly were under probation at the time they left the Island due to compliance with criminal sanctions.

Although MININT did not disclose the identities of the fugitives or the nature of their crimes, it confirmed that legal action would be taken. The individuals will be brought before the relevant courts for review of their legal benefits, suggesting that they could face more serious consequences, including revocation of their probation and possible return to prison.

In addition to repatriations by sea, since November 2022, the United States has decided to return numerous migrants to Cuba through flights, labeling them “inadmissible” in its territory.

The Island is currently experiencing the largest migration in its history. Throughout fiscal year 2022, a total of 224,607 Cuban citizens arrived in the United States through land borders. This figure represents an increase of almost six times compared to the Cuban migrants who arrived in 2021 (39,303), and 16 times more than those registered in 2020 (14,015).
