In Stockholm, the qualification situation is only slightly better than the rest of the country. According to the Education Agency, 14.8 percent of the teachers in special elementary schools in Stockholm are qualified. According to the city’s own calculations, the number is 25 percent.

The number of students in special elementary schools in Stockholm has more than doubled in ten years.

Lee Orberson, head of Stockholm’s basic education operations, says that recruiting qualified staff for special schools is a prioritized issue, and the city’s education administration is working to improve the situation.

Genuinely interested

– We need to get more people to want to work with this group of students and train as special education teachers. Many have become teachers out of interest in their subject, and even though the special school emphasizes learning, many other skills are also practiced there. Must be genuinely interested in these students and want to work with them. Not all teachers want that, says Orberson.
