Armed with assault rifles, sticks, and machetes, a group of individuals, presumably members of the “El Maíz” group/”CORN”, linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) forced elements of the National Guard to abandon a base of operations in Chiapas.

The events occurred in the municipality of Comapala border, located in the south of the state. There, the uniformed men had set up a camp in at least two buildings that they used to rest and protect their belongings.

According to local media reports, it was on January 16 when the armed command arrived and, through threats, expelled the agents and presumably stripped them of their weapons and other items.

“Come out compa, you don’t have much time,” said one of the alleged hitmen to one of the guards while some of his companions inspected the area. The aggressive encounter was captured on video by one of the apparent attackers and was broadcast days later on social networks.

According to press reports, the military personnel were resting in the community of Saint Gregory Chamic when they were taken by surprise by the men of “MAÍZ”.

Although the recording did not reveal the reason why they would have evicted said camp, the first versions pointed out that it was a measure to intimidate the GN and prevent the institution from deploying security operations in the area.

It is also presumed that the members of the group identified as a paramilitary arm of the CJNG they would have stolen the arsenal that the military kept at their operational base. “Give me a truck and take all the weapons,” one of the subjects in the video yelled.

Blow him up before the other people come, they’re going to set fire to them here” was one of the threats with which the possible members of “MAÍZ” forced the military to leave the place.

Faced with the intimidation of the armed men, the elements of the GN did not put up any resistance, they took their belongings and withdrew.

At one point in the recording the detonation of a firearm was heard. Although it was not possible to see who fired the rifle, moments later a uniformed man is observed lamenting an apparent foot injury. According to the statements of the armed command and a national guard who appeared in the video, the agent would have shot himself.

“MAIZ” is identified in the region as a paramilitary group newly createdsince the first records of its operation date back to 2022. Some reporters and residents of Chiapas have linked this faction as an armed wing of the four letter cartel and as responsible for multiple attacks on activists who fight against mining exploitation in the region.

On January 11, 2023, the Social Movement for the Earth (MST) issued a statement in which it assured that the “MAÍZ” group was responsible for the deprivation of liberty, torture and injuries against its leader, Isabel Recinos Trigueros, known as chave.

“This aggression was carried out after countless threats from the paramilitary group ‘MAIZ’, which appeared last year and which claims to be an arm of organized crime, and through violence and intimidation, intends to subdue society in the border region. and sierra to stop opposing the operation and looting of mining companies that damage the environment and the health of the population,” the activist group asserted.

Up to now, the National Guard has not issued any statement regarding the eviction of its members in the Chiapas camp.
