The Center for Economic Studies of the Private Sector (CEESP), asked the federal government withstand the onslaught of inflation and avoid price controlbecause this could affect companies and generate more harmful effects on the economy.

“It is very important that economic policy respond adequately to the persistence of inflation and the slowdown in activity. Administrative price controls must be avoided, which have historically and universally been counterproductive sooner or later,” the institution pointed out.

For the body attached to the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), the issue of inflation continues to be a drag on the economy, as this has affected the purchasing power of consumers.

In the first month of the year, the increase in consumer prices was 0.68 percent per month, the highest since August 2022. Its main origin was the 0.71 percent increase in the prices of the underlying indicator, which generated 78 percent of the headline inflation, and continues to resist falling.

It is worrying that the highest price rise was concentrated in the food, beverages and tobacco category (processed products other than agricultural products), which was 1.25 percent and which alone caused 41 percent of the general increase.

“This undoubtedly continues to tax the pocket of consumers, especially those with fewer resources, and pushes up poverty levels,” added the CEESP.

The Center headed by Carlos Hurtado, assured that it is also essential that the government offer better signals so that investment is reactivated, through actions and more friendly speeches and policies that allow lowering operating costs -transportation, logistics, security, etc.- in all the country.
