“This is really worrying. One would have to wonder why these violent waves seek the judicial premises, the prosecutor’s office or the premises of the PNP. It seems that there is an interest in destroying something. The just protests of the people can in no way lead to the burning of judicial offices,” said the president of the Judiciary, Javier Arevalo.

He added that he sees “a pattern” of attacks on security institutions and the judiciary during the protests against the Dina Boluarte administration that began last December.

According to Arévalo, similar attacks have occurred in other regions such as Cusco, Apurímac or Ayacucho. For this reason, he asked the president to take “measures, not repressive, not to take out and shoot people, but rather she has to find the right balance and establish order” in the country.

So far, the protests have left 42 protesters and one police officer dead, while another nine people have lost their lives from various causes caused by roadblocks and demonstrations.

The demonstrators demand the resignation of Boluarte and the closure of Congress, as well as the calling of general elections for this year and a constituent assembly.

Before the death in Macusani was announced, the general secretary of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) gave a press conference. “The fight of the Peruvian people does not end tomorrow, the fight will continue if it is intended that Mrs. Dina Boluarte does not listen to the people,” he said. Geronimo Lopezwho called the strike.

“It is a fair, democratic mobilization of citizens who have come from the regions and also from here, from Lima. It is a national popular civic strike with peaceful mobilizations of organizations from different regions, avoiding any act of vandalism”, he added.

Although the government decreed a State of emergency for 30 days in Lima, Cusco, Callao and Fist (where Macusani is located), the union leader specified that the organizers did not request authorization for the concentration.

The country’s crisis also reflects the huge gap that exists between the capital and the poor provinces that support former president Pedro Castillo and that saw in his election a form of revenge against Lima’s contempt.
