It has been a long and difficult road for the Miami Commission to come up with a new electoral map, after various groups including the American Union for Civilians and other groups of Miami residents sued the city over the districts approved in 2022. .
Judge Michael Moore ordered the city to adopt a new map, and this particularly impacts three commissioners who face re-election in November. And it leaves commissioner joe carollo’s house outside of district 3.
The Commission’s proposed map extended their district to the Coconut Grove section of the home owned by Commissioner Joe Carollo and his wife. Before this the couple lived in a property in Little Havana.
Commissioners are required by law to live within the district they represent. On the other hand, a resident of Allapatah and opponent of Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla had been eliminated from District 1 by the commission and the map approved by the judge allows his house to be part of the district again and can aspire to the commission. Miguel Angel Gabela had claimed that she had been very intentionally cut from the district so as not to allow her to run.
The city has said it will appeal the judge’s decision according to the election officials map tomorrow, August 1.
