Third suspect arrested in New Bedford murder case

A third person was arrested in connection with a homicide in New Bedford, Massachusetts, earlier this week.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday that Xavier Luis Rodriguez, 20, of New Bedford, has been charged with murder and possession of an illegal firearm in the investigation into the death of Lorenzo Gomes, of 20 years.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Rodríguez on Thursday and arrested him later that night.

Two other defendants have previously been arrested in this case, both charged with accessory to murder after the fact.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that Wyllie Monteiro, 25, of New Bedford, was arrested in Dartmouth and is being charged with accessory to murder after the fact. Sterling Robinson, 24, was arrested earlier this week in Fall River and also charged with accessory to murder, prosecutors said.

City police received a report of gunshots around Tallman and East Front streets early Monday morning, and officers found the victim inside her vehicle on Belleville Avenue, authorities said. Investigators believe Gomes was trying to drive to the hospital when he lost consciousness in the vehicle.

Rodriguez will be arraigned Friday in New Bedford District Court.
