This December 28, a classic of French cinema arrives on Netflix… or almost. Considered one of François Ozon’s best achievements, 8 Women brings together an exceptional cast. Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Fanny Ardant, Emmanuelle Béart and Danielle Darrieux star in this musical film released in 2002. Almost 20 years later, this classic has also been adapted by the Italians. If the French film can be viewed on Disney+, it is this remake, entitled 7 Give e a mistero (translated into 7 Women for the French market) which is now available for all to see on Netflix. While some details differ between Ozon’s film and that of Alessandro Genovesi, the basis of the screenplay remains the same. And for good reason, these two films are actually adaptations of the play Eight Womenby Robert Thomas, published in 1958.

What is the story of 8 Women ?

In the play as in the French film, the plot takes place in the bourgeois milieu of the 1950s. As a family prepares to celebrate Christmas, the father is found dead, stabbed. From his wife to his sister to domestic workers, all possible murderers are women. Each had a good reason for wanting to kill the man. But there is only one culprit and it must be unmasked.

What is the difference between the two adaptations?

François Ozon had decided to adapt Robert Thomas’s play by integrating sung and choreographed passages. An idea that made this film very original. Italian director of 7 Women did not repeat it. Moreover, he even decided to place the plot in the 1930s and to involve only seven women in the plot, as the name of the film suggests. As for the cast, we find Margherita Buy, already seen in Mia MadreMicaela Ramazzotti, leading role in crazy with joy, in 2016 or even Sabrina Impacciatore, who plays Valentina in the last season of The White Lotus.
