Austrian farmer and energy producer Tobias Ilg is exploring the possibilities of mixing biochar in concrete together with a concrete factory.

– Biochar helps us cut down on cement. In the future, concrete can become a carbon sink by binding carbon dioxide in the concrete, says Tobias Ilg in “The world of science – Quickfix for the climate?”

Biochar is produced when organic material is burned without adding oxygen. The carbon dioxide that would be released during normal combustion is instead bound as carbon in the biochar.

Even in Sweden, companies are developing construction products such as concrete and mortar that can store biochar.

“The most important thing is that we reduce emissions”

Cecilia Hermansson, who chairs the Climate Policy Council, believes that carbon dioxide capture and storage is only part of what needs to be done to reduce emissions.

– Storing carbon dioxide is what we call supplementary measures. We are quite far from scaling up and really being able to do this in a good way.

What is the most important thing to do in order for us to reach the climate goals?

– The most important thing is that we reduce emissions, and we still have a lot to do there. We need to do a lot in, above all, the area of transport, says Cecilia Hermansson.
