NASA wants to go to Mars, the Artemis program is supposed to make the necessary preparations. Now the space agency has presented the habitat in which everyday life on the red planet is being tested. Four researchers will soon be moving in for a year.

Four volunteers launch year-long simulated Mars mission

In order to even think about a flight to Mars, many vital systems have to be tested fundamentally. In addition to technical challenges, there are also psychological effects that need to be taken into account during the crew’s long journey and stay on a hostile planet. This is exactly where the “Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analogue” program, or CHAPEA for short, comes in. Now the first of three planned missions starts.

“This summer, four volunteers will embark on a year-long mission to Mars in the ground-based Habitat, helping NASA prepare for human exploration of Mars for the benefit of humanity,” the statement said NASA in the usual heroic tone. It is further explained that advanced techniques such as 3D printing of the walls were used in the construction of the habitat.

NASA prepares for Mars

The experiment is set to begin in June, and the crew’s activities schedule is full. NASA is focused on testing all topics relevant to Mars with simulated spacewalks, robotic missions, habitat maintenance, plant cultivation, personal hygiene and sports.

The crew is also deliberately exposed to problems that future members of a Mars mission could also encounter. In addition to the effects of isolation, habitat residents will also face other environmental stressors, resource scarcity, and equipment failure.

Summary

  • NASA Artemis Program: Researchers obtain habitat for year-long simulated Mars mission.
  • Advanced techniques such as 3D printing used in habitat construction.
  • CHAPEA program researches psychological effects of travel and stay.
  • Launching in June: simulated spacewalks, maintenance, crop growing and more.
  • Simulate isolation, environmental stressors, resource scarcity, and equipment failure.
