Summer is well and truly over. Proof of this are the days that are getting shorter and the nights that are falling earlier and earlier. If some already regret the longer days, this is not the case for those who will immerse themselves with almost guaranteed pleasure in Still Up. The new Apple TV+ series follows in eight episodes the geographical and emotional nocturnal wanderings of the duo of friends formed by Danny and Lisa, two chronic insomniacs who call each other on FaceTime night after night to accompany each other, and sometimes pull each other towards down, in their respective (mis)adventures. An English comedy full of freshness and pleasant surprises. Enough to overcome the back-to-school blues and offer a nice comfort blanket to the most restless sleepers.

Still Up (Apple TV+): an original fiction far from being soporific

If you are looking for sun and daylight, go your way. In fact, the entirety of Still Up takes place in the London night, offering in passing a portrait of the city that few know: the lively capital of its night owls. But this is not about a festive nightlife, but simply about those who experience the highlight of their days when everyone else is sleeping. Night workers and other insomniacs cross paths, meet or struggle to the rhythm of a city slowed down by the night, shedding light on these invisible inhabitants who are often forgotten in fiction. If Danny, an absolute hypochondriac, is unable to leave his house, giving rise to scenes as absurd as they are enjoyable, Lisa crisscrosses the city every night, following her tribulations, each more zany than the last (semi-theft in a pharmacy on call, clothing clash on a bus…). But much more than Lisa’s setbacks, these moments are above all an opportunity to sketch a gallery of portraits made up of colorful characters, of all ages, all backgrounds, sometimes hilarious, sometimes reactionary, but oh so realistic.

Even in the night, opposites attract in Still Up

But above all it is the two main characters, steeped in all kinds of anxieties but ready for all the fantasies in this world that they recreate every night, which gives the flavor of this series. If Craig Roberts (Danny) is little known in France, this is not the case for his partner, Antonia Thomas (Lisa), already very popular for her roles in the series Misfitsas Alisha, and Good Doctor, where she played Dr. Claire Brown. This taboo-free tandem proves effective and endearing, even though they only communicate via screens. The mirror effect of their personalities, one free in his movements and his words, facing another who is physically and emotionally reclusive, works and offers offbeat and funny scenes as only the English have the secret. It obviously won’t take long to see that this strange friendship will shake up everyone’s lives, day and night.
