Three days of mourning and funeral to bid farewell to NJ Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver

New Jersey will dedicate three days to remember and fire the lieutenant governor, Sheila Oliver, who died on August 1st after being hospitalized for a medical problem that is still unknown.

Democratic Governor Phil Murphy wrote in writing that the official’s remains would be laid to rest in the Capitol rotunda on Thursday, August 10, followed by a similar honor at the historic Courthouse in Essex County on August 11.

Funeral and memorial services are scheduled for Aug. 12 at Newark’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Murphy explained that “as we join in mourning the loss of Sheila Oliver, a family and friend, we will remember the legacy she left as a pioneer for change.”

Details on Sheila Oliver’s celebration of life:

  • Thursday August 10, 2023:

Oliver will rest in the Rotunda of the New Jersey State House, where the public can pay their respects to him. Oliver will be escorted and escorted by a rotating New Jersey State Police Honor Guard.

  • Friday August 11, 2023:

Oliver’s remains will be escorted to the Historic Essex County Courthouse by the Honor Guard, where members of the public will also be able to pay their respects. She will be accompanied by a rotating Essex County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard.

Oliver will be escorted to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey, where a memorial service open to the public will be held. After the service, her casket will be escorted by the New Jersey State Police Honor Guard to her final resting place where she will be buried in a private ceremony.
