The authorities of the wilaya of Tipaza decided today to permanently close the turkey market located in the area of Megtaa Kheira, commune of Douaouda. And this, because of the catastrophic and chaotic situation that the market is experiencing. In detail, the wali of the Tipaza wilaya, Abou Bakr al-Siddiq Bousta, chaired a meeting today which was devoted to the study and monitoring of the situation of the turkey market.

It should be noted that several other officials took part in this meeting, in particular, the general secretary of the wilaya, the executive directors concerned, the national gendarmerie and local authorities of Douaouda. As a result, it was decided to permanently close this market and stop the slaughter of turkeys. On the occasion of this meeting, those in charge decided to rent the space for another activity.

This, after having approved the proposal presented by the management of the environment and the veterinary and trade inspection, subject to compliance with the specifications, especially with regard to the cleanliness of the environment. Indeed, the municipality of Douaouda will be able to exploit the market outside the slaughtering activity, by organizing an auction for the 22 stores and the 18 tables present on the market.

A deplorable state of the turkey market

In fact, you are aware that for years, the Magtaa Kheira turkey market has been in a catastrophic situation. This is due to the disorderly slaughter of turkeys and the chaotic way of disposing of waste such as entrails and feathers. Indeed, these practices have seriously damaged the environment and have been a real thorn in the side of local authorities.

And that’s not all ! Truth be told, customers also face health risks because of the way turkey meat is slaughtered and marketed. In this wake, it should be noted that other illegal activities have emerged on the sidelines of this activity. These include the slaughter and sale of mutton without control and illegally.

Unfortunately, sick and unfit sheep’s heads are slaughtered, as well as ewes’ heads, in unsanitary conditions. In this sense, it will be recalled that the association for the protection of consumers and their environment of the wilaya of Tipaza had also repeatedly warned of the dangers and had called for an end to this unfortunate situation by definitively closing the market or reviewing and re-launching it in accordance with health and hygiene standards.
