Tips for Celebrating a Safe 4th of July

The FWC reminds boaters that boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs is dangerous and illegal.

Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be searched by FWC officers and arrested.

According to FWC boating accident statistics, 13% of fatal accidents in 2022 were alcohol or drug related.

Launched in 2009 by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) in collaboration with the United States Coast Guard, Operation Dry Water has been a highly successful effort to avert the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Boat owners are reminded:

-have a fire extinguisher

-check life jackets

-flares

-ensure boat lights work properly

Alejandro Córdoba, of the United States Coast Guard, says:

“We have set up a regulation area starting on the Fourth of July at 7 p.m. and ending at two in the morning on the Fifth of July…this area covers Biscayne Bay…maximum speed is 15 knots.”
