Expert jury recognizes “digital surveying” as the best innovation in construction

Every two years, an expert jury on behalf of the industry medium Solid awards the best projects and technologies of Austrian construction companies. This year’s main prize in the “Innovation” category goes to the inventors of SDX-4DVision, Sodex Innovations, and their development partner Tomaselli Gabriel Bau. The system collects 38 million measuring points per minute while working, revolutionizing documentation and billing in civil engineering, road and pipeline construction.

Some excavators from the Walgau-based company Tomaselli Gabriel Bau have special additional equipment: the SDX-4DVision from Sodex Innovations. It consists of a camera, 3D scanner and a computing unit. 38 million measuring points are collected every minute and linked to photos from the construction site. This system is based on the existing assistance system of the excavator and thus saves costs and training time. The machine operator constantly sees the actual and target situation of the site on his monitor and can select with a click which material is currently being moved. Accounting for the excavation work is child’s play and manual measurements are no longer necessary.

Tomaselli Gabriel Bau and Sodex Innovations have now received the renowned Bautech prize for the invention and practical further development of the system. This is awarded every two years by a seven-person expert jury on behalf of the industry medium Solid. The project received the main prize in the Innovation category. The ceremonial presentation took place last Thursday in Vienna’s Lusthaus.

Great potential through digitization
“We want to create development and drive digitization in construction,” explains Managing Director Philipp Tomaselli. “We see the award as recognition of our successful pioneering work for the industry.” For Ralf Pfefferkorn, Managing Director of Sodex Innovations, “the award is a clear sign that the digitization of the construction industry has arrived in Austria.”

Especially with regard to large infrastructure projects, both see great potential in the solution. The combination of GPS data, 3D laser scan and snapshots automatically evaluated by image recognition enable perfect documentation for builders. To do this, the information collected is linked and converted into CAD plans. Decades later, for example, public authorities still know exactly what was installed where in civil engineering projects.

Fact-Box:
