The colonization of Mars, between eyebrows for the POT, you need to consolidate your support. The objective of the North American aerospace agency is that the pioneers who reach the red planet can produce their own food, and for this they are carrying out tests with tomatoes on the International Space Station.

At present, NASA encourages the cultivation of tomatoes for the space agriculture experiment Veg-05. The overall project is called Pick-and-Eat Salad-Crop Productivity, Nutritional Value and Acceptability to Supplement the ISS Food System.

As explained in a statement, “The main objective of botanical research is to create a continuous system of fresh food production for support astronauts traveling far beyond low earth orbit and decrease reliance on visiting cargo missions.”

Frank Rubio, an astronaut of Salvadoran origin on the International Space Station, was the most recent person in charge of the crop, according to the photos shown by NASA.

What kind of tomatoes are grown on the International Space Station?

The specific part of the tomato crop is called veg-05, and is powered from Earth by Gioia Massa of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and several collaborators.

“Veg-05 research broadens crop variety to dwarf tomatoes and focuses on the impact of light quality and fertilizers on fruit production, the microbial safety of the food, the nutritional value, the acceptability of the taste by the crew”, highlights the team.

But the key to the experiment is not to grow just any tomato. They’re Red Robin tomatoes, Cherry type, very small, fertilized with a proprietary mixture of Florikan CRF 14-4-14 T 180 days and T 100 days, as well as a 70-day flowering plant finisher.

The important thing is that seeds and special material were used to have greater consistency, sowing in a miniature greenhouse. Could something similar be seen in the future on Mars? The way things are going, it’s very possible, even if it’s in the far future.
