FDP and Greens are arguing – again – about climate protection. It was only on Monday that the climate expert council announced that the targets of its own climate protection law had again not been achieved. The panel particularly criticized the Ministry of Transport. The “necessary trend reversal” cannot be observed here.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) should actually present an immediate climate protection program within three months, but he has no plans to do so. The FDP wants to soften the annual sector targets that the climate protection law stipulates. So it was decided in the coalition committee: “In the future, compliance with the climate protection goals should be checked on the basis of a cross-sectoral and multi-year overall account.”

The Liberals are now waiting for this reform, and believe it will come within the three months Wissing has time for the program. “I expect the climate protection law to be presented quickly so that we can decide on the overall package agreed in the coalition agreement before the summer break,” said Lukas Koehler, Vice President of the FDP.

The Greens rely on annual monitoring

The Greens see it differently and refer to the next sentence in the decision of the coalition partners: The basis for the overall accounts is “the annual monitoring”. “No one can be relieved of responsibility,” wrote Greens leader Ricarda Lang on Twitter. “Sector goals and departmental responsibility must be retained in principle.”

Wissing should start working

And in general they find: “We have a new legal situation when the Federal President signs a new law.” That said Irene Mihalic, parliamentary manager of the Greens. She advised Wissing: “In his place, I would start working because we don’t have a schedule yet.”

And the chancellor? In any case, on Monday a government spokesman supported Wissing’s view: “We have a different decision-making situation,” he said in relation to a necessary immediate climate protection program.
