Trial against Dani Alves is scheduled to begin in February 2024

BARCELONA.- The trial for alleged sexual assault against the Brazilian soccer star, Dani Alves will begin on February 5, 2024, a court based in Barcelona.

Alves is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in December 2022. The former right back of the Catalans has been in preventive detention since January. His requests for bail have been rejected by the court on the grounds that he was a flight risk.

The Brazilian has denied having acted wrongly and claims to have had consensual sexual relations with the accuser. He was charged by a magistrate judge in August and the court said there was enough evidence to start a trial.

Initially, Alves denied knowing the alleged victim, and then change his version of events, something he has done on several occasions since his arrest and which has not helped his case.

State prosecutors are seeking a sentence of nine years in prison. Lawyers representing the alleged victim want him to spend 12 years behind bars.

Alves, 40, won 42 titles in his football career, including three Champions Leagues con Barcelona and two America Cups con Brazil. He played his third world Cup last year in Qatar.
