At least twelve people died and dozens were injured Monday night by an explosion and fire at a gas station in Dagestana Russian region in the Caucasus, the Ministry of Emergency Situations announced.
“More of 60 people were injured in a Makhachkala fire and 12 of them are dead,” the ministry wrote on Telegram.
makhachkalaon the shores of the Caspian Sea, is the capital of Dagestan.
The fire, in which 260 firefighters are working, affects an area of about 600 m2, indicated the ministry.
According to a witness quoted on Telegram by the Russian newspaper Izvestiathe fire started in an area where there were parked vehicles and spread to the gas station.
“After the explosion, everything fell on top of our heads, we couldn’t see anything,” explained this witness, whose name is not mentioned in the media.
A video posted on Telegram by the Ria Novosti news agency shows that flames rise above a building before a gigantic explosion occurs.
