The new paid version of Twitter desired by Elon Musk was launched on November 2 in the United States. Three months later, she arrives in France.

No teasing or official communication. It is in all discretion that the paid Twitter of Elon Musk has just made its appearance in France. On the evening of February 2, French tweeters were able to discover a new Twitter Blue button, nestled in the menu column.

For the moment, the subscription allows Twitter users longer videos and offers privileged access to the sacrosanct certification, subject to verification of their telephone number. Users whose profile has been verified for free should, meanwhile, be given a 90-day reprieve from subscribing to Twitter Blue if they want to keep their blue check mark. Otherwise, they will be demoted to the rank of ordinary accounts.

Other features reserved for subscribers are to be expected, such as the prioritization of verified accounts in search results, the reduction of advertising volume (up to half as much), and early access to certain options under development. (editing tweets up to five times for 30 minutes, NFT avatars and uploading 1080p videos).

Prices displayed excluding taxes: bad start for Twitter Blue

On the Twitter website, the subscription is displayed at 8 euros in monthly debits, or 84 euros per year. Small precision, however, concerning the amount which, in a perfectly concealed way, is displayed excluding tax, what is illegal in France. Including the amount of VAT, the monthly offer will actually be billed at 9.60 euros per month, or 100.80 euros with a one-year commitment.

Last October, anticipating possible breaches of the laws governing the EU, European Commissioner Thierry Breton tweeted to Elon Musk, reminding the new Twitter boss that “the liberated bird” should fly according to the rules of Europe.

On the mobile application, on the other hand, the subscription is displayed including VAT. However, there is a significant price difference, while the monthly subscription rises to 11 euros per month on Android and 12 euros per month on iOS. A price that includes the commission recovered by Google and Apple as part of in-app purchases.

Along with its deployment in France, Twitter Blue is now available in 11 other new countries, including Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Saudi Arabia.
