Just days after deleting the old free verification ticks, Twitter returned the icons to many accounts with more than a million followers. Not everyone was happy about it: actor Patton Oswalt and model Chrissy Teigen, for example, immediately tried to get rid of the once coveted ticks.

Because the explanatory text says that the account has taken out the paid subscription Blue – and the celebrities value the statement that they are not paying any money to Elon Musk’s Twitter.

Previously, the white ticks on a blue background were given free by Twitter to celebrities and public figures after an identity check. Musk called the system “corrupt” after buying Twitter. He announced that only Blue subscribers will have the same-looking icon on their accounts as before. There is no real verification, only a telephone number is confirmed.

Some users have questioned whether Twitter could face legal trouble by returning a tick if the explanation text incorrectly states that a celebrity subscribed to a paid subscription. Today, for example, the accounts of deceased stars such as actor Chadwick Boseman and basketball player Kobe Bryant also carried the symbol.
