Ukrainian hackers have apparently stolen the digital communications of a high-ranking Russian intelligence officer who, among other things, is said to have infiltrated the Hillary Clinton campaign in the 2016 US presidential campaign.

At that time, the election campaign of the Democratic presidential candidate and some party bodies were successfully attacked. This also played into the hands of competitor Donald Trump, who repeatedly scandalized content from the e-mails stolen and published at the time. In the subsequent investigations by the US Federal Police FBI, the name of the Russian Lieutenant Colonel Sergey Morgachev appeared, against whom formal charges were brought in 2018.

Now Ukrainian hackers from the Cyber Resistance group want access to the Russian’s digital correspondence, the news agency reported Reuters. The messages they copied from the intelligence officer’s mailbox also appear to be genuine. The content at least corresponds to what has been researched so far about the person and his work area.

GRU in action

With the news that has now become known, the suspicion that Morgachev is a department head in unit 26165 of the GRU military intelligence service is confirmed. This is the organizational area that is responsible for digital espionage and propaganda campaigns in the data networks. Morgachev’s inbox could therefore shed light on Russia’s hacking operations, including the operation against Clinton and the Democrats.

“A very cool and clever hacker, but… We hacked him,” the group said in a statement. However, the latter did not simply put their information online, but handed it over to the Ukrainian scene magazine InformNapalm. However, it is likely that Ukrainian secret service agents and their foreign allies are also working on an evaluation.
