NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg believes that the war in Ukraine may last “for many, many years” because of Russia’s attitude.

NATO must prepare for a long confrontation with Russia, because President Vladimir Putin shows no desire for peace, a year after invading Ukraine, warned the Secretary General of the Alliance, the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, in an interview with Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“We have to be prepared for the long term, it can be for many, many years,” he warned.

“President Putin wants a different Europe, a Europe where he can control his neighbours, where he can decide what countries can do,” said Jens Stoltenberg, 63, in this interview given a week before the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.

“Make sure Ukraine wins this war”

After a year of fighting that has claimed tens of thousands of victims on both sides, NATO fears a new Russian offensive. The 30 member countries of the Alliance remain more determined than ever to ensure that Ukraine ultimately prevails, assured the Secretary General.

“We are here to make sure Ukraine wins this war and to provide it with the weapons, ammunition and support it needs,” he said.

“If President Putin wins in Ukraine, it will be a tragedy for Ukrainians. But it will also be dangerous for all of us, because he and other authoritarian leaders will be convinced that when they use military force, they can achieve their goals.” .
