The National Autonomous University of Mexico acknowledged that it does not have the mechanisms to withdraw the degree title of Minister Yasmín Esquivel Mossa, despite the fact that the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Aragón demonstrated that there is plagiarism in her degree thesis.

Through a press release that signed by the rector Enrique Graue Wiechers, the highest house of studies, validated the studies carried out by the FES on the analysis of the theses of the minister (1987) and the lawyer Edgar Ulises Báez (1986) where it was highlighted that there was “substantial copy” by the member of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).

However, in the statement it was specified that, although the breach of the University Legislation was verified, there are no mechanisms to invalidate the titleTherefore, the minister will keep her law degree from UNAM, since she finished her studies and presented her professional exam before a designated jury.

“From the interpretation requested from the Office of the General Counsel, it can be deduced that university regulations lacks the mechanisms to override a degree issued by the National University, even when the plagiarism of a thesis is documented”, could be read in the statement.

In addition to the above, the rector of the UNAM indicated that the FES Aragón is in the process of administrative investigation, as established by the University Legislation, against Professor Martha Rodríguez Ortiz, who served as director of the aforementioned theses. .

The UNAM recalled that, after the facts that became public, the decision to adopt measures has already been taken to prevent such cases from recurring, for which reason some modifications to the titling processes.

“Our house of studies considers that it will always be better to prevent cases as unfortunate and painful as these, therefore, in agreement with the College of Directors of Faculties and Schools, the first measures have already been taken in this regard, as well as the study of the alternatives that allow us to strengthen our regulations to prevent issues such as the one at hand”, could be read.

Finally, the University highlighted its commitment to promote high values ​​such as ethics and integrity to those who make up the university community: “Plagiarism, let there be no doubt, andIt is an inadmissible practice that we will continue to combat”.

The UNAM message was given minutes after the FES Aragón determined that the thesis presented by the minister yasmin esquivel in 1987 is a “substantial copy” of the one presented in 1986 by the former student of the Faculty of Law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

The determination was informed on January 11 by the Academic and Scientific Integrity Committee of the FES Aragón, in order to issue the statement, the text was analyzed in the elements of “development, style, content, temporality, consistency and information management of both theses.

“The committee has prepared a Technical Academic Opinion from which it can be deduced that, from thehe thesis prepared in 1987 is a substantial copy of the original presented in 1986 by the former student of the Faculty of Law”, could be read in the statement that was shared through the institutional channels of the educational establishment.
