At the coronation of King Charles III. the appearance of a grim reaper caused a stir on social media. Now the riddle could be solved.

Update from May 11, 12:15 p.m.: The eerie figure, who is known as the Grim Reaper in the story about the coronation of Charles III. (74) may have been received on May 6th has been exposed. On request from Newsweek Westminster Abbey referred to the character as a sexton. He is a member of the abbey community who helps with the services.

On the day of the coronation itself, additional staff and helpers were on duty to ensure that events ran smoothly, Westminster Abbey said. The sexton, who unexpectedly gained fame, must have been surprised himself by his big appearance.

The coronation service and processions to and from Buckingham Palace have been among the largest ceremonial events in Britain for almost 70 years, since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Westminster Abbey was therefore closed to the public a few weeks before the big day to allow a team of workers to prepare the interior for the coronation.

On the short message platform Twitter, in addition to lively discussions about the coronation ceremony and the guests present, a surprising guest in Westminster Abbey caused a stir. Because on a short video clip, the nave of Westminster Abbey can be seen and for a brief moment you can see a figure cloaked in black scurrying through a passage.

“Did anyone else just notice the Grim Reaper in Westminster Abbey?” wrote the Twitter user who shared the video. “I thought I imagined it,” laughs one user, “That’s probably my favorite moment of the coronation,” agrees another.

Some particularly cheeky comments can’t help but be compared to other members of the British royal family. “So Meghan made it to the crowning after all,” quips one fan, “That’s Prince Andrew in costume,” jokes another. While the ominous figure was most likely just a passing guest, one spiteful user theorized, “Charles will have a short reign.”
