The first Pixel Watch owners report that Google is now starting fall detection as promised. The smartwatch now also recognizes when you have an accident and calls for help in an emergency – but there are restrictions.

After the launch of the Pixel Watch in autumn 2022, Google confirmed that the group would add some announced functions via function updates after the market launch. Such a first “feature drop” already existed in December. Now, with the first update of 2023, the advertised fall and accident detection is also starting. That reports that Online magazine 9to5Google.

At launch, Google said the Pixel Watch’s fall detection “is coming this winter,” and now the update is rolling out to early devices. Users have to activate the detection once. The fall detection is designed for forces of up to 32 g. On the watch, it is displayed under Settings > Security & Emergency > Fall Detection. There is also a corresponding setting in the Pixel Watch app and an initial notification. Fall detection and international emergency calls are not available in all areas.

It is also important that fall detection does not yet offer correct accident detection in every case. It may not recognize all falls, Google writes in the new support document:

accident detection

“Starting this winter (summer in Australia), Google Pixel Watch will support accident detection. When a violent fall is detected, Google Pixel Watch will alert you and ask you if you want to call emergency services. Note: In Australia and Germany, the automatic Calling the emergency services not supported.”

The Group has further details on this at g.co/pixelwatch/personalsafety listed.
