Juarez City.- Given the proximity of the New Year’s Eve dinner, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) recommended consuming the food of the day in the usual manner and hours, as well as including a portion of vegetables at each meal, using small plates to avoid eating large quantities and do not repeat the dishes.

Nutritionist Alma Belén Membrila Torres suggested celebrating only with members who live in the same household, using individual utensils and not sharing food from the same plate or drinks from the same glass, as well as maintaining a healthy distance, using face masks and washing hands frequently.

He stressed that for all members of the family the diet must be healthy, as this reduces the risk of suffering from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high levels of cholesterol or fats in the blood (dyslipidemia), and if they suffer , complications are reduced.

In addition, he stressed that eating healthy, with foods rich in vitamins and minerals, helps strengthen the immune system. The specialist in the area of ​​Nutrition and Health of Social Security explained that for New Year’s dinner it is important to avoid prolonged fasting and eat normally during the day.

Membrila Torres stressed that dishes such as green salads or sautéed vegetables should be preferred and for the main dish low-fat meats, such as baked or enchiladas leg, loin or turkey, instead of fried or roasted stews; also do without the excessive use of salt, fat and sugars.

For desserts, he said, the best option is jellies and fresh fruits, and not those that are served in syrup or with high amounts of sugar, flour or fat in their preparation. Regarding the food portions, she recalled that the stomach of minors does not have the same capacity as that of adults.

Given this, he pointed out that it is appropriate for children to be served on a plate of approximately 19 centimeters in diameter, while older ones on one of 23. Half the plate with vegetables and the other half rice or spaghetti and a portion of food of animal origin; the ideal is not to repeat the food.

He emphasized that another recommendation is not to drink alcoholic beverages, because when mixed with soda, diabetics may suffer severe decompensation. He stressed that people with chronic conditions are required to carry out their treatment, checking their glucose and blood pressure levels.
