US Ambassador Warns Irregular Immigrants That They May Be Deported

The US ambassador to Costa Rica, Cynthia Telles, warned migrants moving through Central America this week that they will be deported if they enter US soil irregularly and that they also expose themselves to other legal consequences.

The US diplomat insisted to the migrants that for their safety they do not believe the lies told by human traffickers, because they are exposed to extortion, kidnapping and situations that put their lives at risk. In addition, the United States is working on actions for safe, orderly, and humane migration..

The US immigration public health order ended on May 11, but the United States will still strengthen its immigration laws to quickly process and return those who have arrived at the border illegally.“said the ambassador in a statement.

This message from the US ambassador to the Central American country comes at a time when Costa Rica is registering an increase in the entry of migrants from Panama, mainly Venezuelans, who are transiting towards the southern border of the United States.

“Migrants who do not comply with current laws will be returned by the US authorities in a matter of a few days or weeks and also those who enter without complying with the legal requirements could face very severe consequences that include a ban on re-entering the United States for 5 years and until facing criminal charges,” warned the ambassador.

Costa Rica has a plan

The Costa Rican government announced last June a plan that seeks to expedite migrant smuggling in the Paso Canoas border area with Panama, which has been on the rise due to the migratory flow from the Darién Jungle that only in the During this year, a total of 248,901 migrants have crossed, a historic figure that exceeds the record number of transients who crossed that border during all of last year.

In addition, it is a measure that also responds to a community movement “that had threatened to close the border line by pressing for a solution to the problem of dozens of transients stranded in that area waiting to continue to North America.”

We hope that this will allow a decrease in the wait in Paso Canoa and that the flow towards the northern border can continue faster, which is the Government’s commitment, safe and respecting the needs of the Costa Rican communities that are being affected at this time.“said the Costa Rican Minister of Communication and Liaison, Jorge Rodríguez Vives in a statement to the EFE news agency.
