Washington, Apr 17 (EFE).- The United States has been in contact with the Sudanese Army and the powerful paramilitary militia Rapid Support Forces (FAR) to ask them for an immediate cessation of violence, revealed on Monday John Kirby, one of the White House spokesmen.

“We have been in direct contact with both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. We have urged them to cease these hostilities immediately and without putting any preconditions, ”he explained in a telephone press conference.

Although at that time Kirby did not specify which senior officials have been in contact with the parties in Sudan, the US State Department confirmed on Monday night that the Secretary of State himself, Antony Blinken, separately called the commanders of both armies .

Blinken “underscored the urgency of reaching a ceasefire to allow the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the fighting,” the office’s deputy spokesman, Vedant Patel, said in a statement.

The head of US diplomacy also called on both leaders to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians, diplomatic personnel and humanitarian workers.

Previously Blinken, who participated in a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Japan on Monday, took a position on the violence in Sudan and called for an “immediate ceasefire”, as well as a return to dialogue between the parties involved in the conflict.

More than 180 civilians have been killed and more than 1,800 wounded during the three days of fighting in Sudan, according to data from the UN special envoy to the African country, Volker Perthes.

The clashes come after weeks of tensions between the army and the FAR over the reform of the security forces during negotiations for a new transitional government.

Both military forces were responsible for jointly overthrowing Sudan’s transitional government in October 2021.
