US records multiple mass shootings during Independence Day festivities

Gun violence in Washington, DC, Louisiana, Florida, Philadelphia, Texas and Baltimore left more than a dozen dead and nearly 60 injured, including children as young as 2.

In Shreveport, Louisiana, at least three people were killed and 10 others injured Tuesday night, Shreveport police Sgt. Angie Willhite said. One of the injured was in critical condition Wednesday, but the others were expected to survive, she said. So far no arrests have been made.

“We are going through problems to obtain information from those present. We’re not getting a lot of cooperation,” Willhite said.

Another body was located in the area early Wednesday morning, Police Chief Wayne Smith said at a news conference.

“There is a possibility that it is a result of what happened last night,” Smith said.

The block party where the shooting occurred has been held around the July 4 holiday for at least 10 years, said Shreveport City Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor, who represents the neighborhood.

Independence Day celebrations in the country’s capital also turned violent when nine people enjoying the festivities were shot in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

Agents responding to a report of a mass shooting around 1 a.m. in a neighborhood about 20 minutes east of the White House found a 9-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy among the victims, it said. Assistant Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, Leslie Parsons. The victims, who were not publicly identified, were hospitalized with injuries considered not to be life-threatening, police added.

In Florida, shots were fired after an altercation between two groups gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July along a canal that runs through Tampa Bay, killing a 7-year-old boy, police said.

The boy was in a van with his grandfather when a shot was fired at the vehicle, hitting the old man in the hand and the boy in the head.
