• 100,000 kilometers Route: Magazine tests over 80 cars
  • light and shadow: mixed result for German manufacturers
  • Big winner: which car won

Cars are a daily companion for many people: Whether to work, to go shopping, to travel – the car is constantly in use and unwinds several kilometers. A magazine tested which cars had the most defects after driving 100,000 kilometers and has now published the results.

No fault points – car from German manufacturer in 1st place

Since 2014 the “Car picture” tested more than 80 cars and observed at least 100,000 kilometers in each case over a maximum period of three years. “Every breakdown, every defect is noted by the test drivers and is ultimately included in the grade“, the magazine explains the evaluation procedure. The general condition of the car is also examined in detail after reaching the destination. For this purpose, the respective car was dismantled after the driving test and checked for wear and tear.

Things are tight at the top of the ranking, with four cars tied for second place:

  • BMW Z4: no major defects, no significant wear
  • Audi A6 Avant sport 40 TDI S tronic: Parking sensor caused error messages
  • Seat Ateca 1.4 Eco TSI Style: Several drivers complained about back problems after long distances
  • Audi A4 Avant: convinced by reliability

The vehicles survived the 100,000 kilometers without any major problems, only small things separated them from the top spot. The “A3 Sportback g-tron” from Audi inside The vehicle, which runs on natural gas, passed the test without any errors and impressed on all levels: “No failure, no damage,” sums up Auto Bild. “Even the final examination after dismantling reveals nothing conspicuous”. That’s why the Audi secured the top grade “1+” with zero fault points – and is thus at the top of the ranking.

Towed: These cars did not convince

The “BMW 320d touring“. The station wagon is the latest graduate of the test and immediately got a place in the top ten. Only “a few functional weaknesses in everyday life, a few (more cosmetic) complaints during disassembly and the high price” cost it an even better one bottom line.

The test for the “Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost“. Due to an engine failure, the small car did not even reach the 100,000 kilometer mark – and had to be towed away. With 52 fault points, the vehicle is currently in last place.

But cars from German manufacturers also showed some major weaknesses: cars from BMW, Audi and Volkswagen cavort in the bottom ten places. The “VW Golf 1.4 TSI Comfortline”, for example, easily managed the 100,000, but already collected twelve fault points. The all-rounder went into overtime, after 200,000 kilometers further defects appeared. Full test results and all the details are here Car picture.
