UV nail polish has been in trend for several years. Why? In contrast to conventional nail polish, this special nail polish is dried using special UV lamps and is more resistant. Scientists from the University of California San Diego have experimented with different combinations of human cells and cells from mice, which they each irradiated with a UV nail polish drying lamp for 20 minutes. During one session, up to 30% of the cells died in a Petri dish. If three such sessions were used in a row, 65 to 70% of the irradiated cells died.
Some of the remaining cells showed mitochondrial and DNA damage and mutations. These are reminiscent of skin cancer patients. As a result, the researchers note that UV lamps to dry nail polish could increase the risk of skin cancer. Similar to what is also the case with solariums. However, it is also pointed out that long-term studies are needed in order to be able to say with certainty whether and to what extent the risk of skin cancer is actually increased by the lamps. Such studies are likely to take at least 10 years to provide reliable results.
Ultimately, everyone should weigh up for themselves whether they want to use such UV lamps to dry nail polish or whether they prefer to play it safe and avoid them. I’m not part of the target group, but if in doubt I would probably rather avoid the possibility of increasing my risk of developing skin cancer.
