Syria.- A delegation of Venezuelan rescuers landed this Thursday in Syria to help in the search and rescue efforts in the north of the country, hit this Monday along with Turkey by the devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 that left thousands dead and wounded.

“Venezuelan Ambassador to Syria, José Gregorio Biomorgi, receives the Venezuelan delegation belonging to the Simón Bolívar Task Force that arrives in this Nation with humanitarian aid,” the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry wrote on its Twitter account.

According to the head of the Venezuelan Humanitarian Aid Mission, Luis Díaz Curvelo, who spoke with Telesur, this is the first part of the rescue team made up of 25 people, which also includes at least 12 tons of humanitarian aid, medicines , food and drinking water. Among the rescuers there are seismic technicians, rescue and first aid specialists, firefighters and members of the Civil Protection with experience in humanitarian and rescue missions, as well as dogs trained to search for corpses and people alive under the rubble.

“We are here to help the Syrian people to face the consequences of the earthquake and to tell them that we are with them in the face of all the circumstances to which they have been exposed and despite all the sanctions imposed on our two countries,” he told the agency. According to data from the Syrian Ministry of Health, cited by the SANA agency, the number of deaths in the country amounted to more than 1,260 and the number of injured exceeds 2,200. Health Minister Hassan al Ghobash says medical teams worked at full capacity for more than 55 hours to reach all the victims and pull them out of the rubble, and transfer the injured to hospitals for prompt treatment.
