In the “Consultation Hours” series, Prof. Weckbecker talks about why quitting is good and why it makes you “fit, rich and beautiful”.

The start of the new year is always the time for good resolutions – and like every year, millions of people will resolve to quit smoking in 2023… and fail. A recurring drama that often ends fatally: 12 percent of all deaths worldwide are attributable to smoking. Every year, 130,000 people die of lung cancer in Germany alone and more than six million suffer from COPD – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In our video consultation, Prof. Klaus Weckbecker explains tips on why it’s so difficult to quit smoking – and what ways there are to manage it anyway.

Prof. Weckbecker holds the chair for general medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke and as such a proven expert for family medicine topics. Together with him we devote ourselves to the so-called common diseases and everyday medical issues.

In the video, Prof. Weckbecker explains:

  • why not only lung cancer but also COPD is a terrible disease
  • how the lungs are destroyed by smoking
  • why nicotine is so addictive
  • why quitting smoking makes you “rich, fit and beautiful”.
  • the purpose of nicotine patches and chewing gum
  • why it can also make sense to switch to electric vaporizers
  • … and why it can still go terribly wrong
